Simple enough right?
OK. Go to http://live.sysinternals.com and grab the latest bginfo.exe (yes, I pioneered that method of downloading software 😉
Now create a custom value that reads from the registry the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\PhysicalHostName
It might throw an error saying it doesn’t exist a few times but if you persist, it will work.
Now rename the Identifier to “VM Parent”
Now add it into your config file and you’re done…we’ll almost…
You have to make sure you have permissions to write out the BMP for the wall paper: I created a file called c:\windows\bginfo.bmp and gave all users full permission to the file. This worked….so far
Now this whole thing works fine in Windows 2003 right out of the gate but now Windows 2008 simply shows (None) for the parent partition. I’ve posted on the forums to see if anyone has a solution so I’ll update this soon
Why is nothing easy?
